Where the wind blows crisper.

The 'country' is that magical place you can escape to where the air is clear, the nature is loud and the scenery is a picture. For me, I start to crave that feeling and solitude that is exploring and relaxing with the honest, untouched Australian land.. And lucky for me this trip to Rush creek was only a 45 minute drive from Brisbane's inner suburbs! The occasion was the stunning wedding of Lina and Guy Wheatstone at The Glengariff Historic Estate which sat perched atop a nearby mountain. So for my partner and I it was an obvious excuse to 'make a weekend of it'. We often enjoy getaways in the company of each other but this time we invited two of our close friends who were also attending the wedding to join us. Being a couple too and not having ventured much out of the Brisbane region, they were so excited to, for one catch up with us and, two, see what this stunning Hinterland had to offer. We arrived at our pre booked air bnb 'Oaklands Cottage' around midday only leaving us a few hours before the 2pm wedding. We were kindly given a tour (all of which took 30 seconds) by the owners' friend who had agreed to play host while they were away. The 100 year old cottage consisted of two bedrooms, a large bathroom, kitchen overlooking the acreage and two spacious balconies. It was connected to the main house by one of the decks but managed to maintain it's privacy and discretion. As soon as we got settled we cracked open some beers (ciders for the girls) and took a walk 50m down the 'backyard' to a small neighbouring wire fence. We were greeted by two stunning horses who were all too happy to make us feel welcome and show off their chestnut silken coat. It was such a glorious day, how could you not instantly feel relaxed and distant from your everyday worries and chores. Suddenly we realised that time had slipped away and we were suited up with a champagne in hand and taking photos on the plush green grass in less than twenty minutes. The afternoon was glorious and could not have been more perfect. It was evening by the time we returned to the cottage and you can certainly feel the country winter air take over you. Although, you want nothing more to be amongst it. We took to the second balcony rugged up in our complimentary robes and thick woollen blankets, and debriefed on the wonderful wedding that it was.

The following morning woke us up with a slight headache and strong yearning for a mug of coffee and a hearty country brekkie. And that's exactly what we got. Only a five minute drive from Oaklands Cottage we stumbled into Dayboro, a classic Australian historic town with vintage wears, lolly shops and bookstore cafes. I couldn't help myself.. country shopping is not of your standard Queen Street Mall variety. My finds included a beautifully decorated notebook, of which I justified to write my blog notes in, a much needed new umbrella with majestic elephants and a wooden handle, and an inspiring day by day hard back book with the "big questions" and "historic moments" of fashion. With not much more to explore, as the town really only took up the street we drove in on, it was time to head back to reality..leaving our memories and hearts in the rolling hills of Brisbane's very own wonderland!
